Bloomington hospitality professionals expect positive impact from new hotels

IU student Sarah Harris and her family from Houston have stayed in many Bloomington hotels over the four years she has been at IU. The prices and high demand of hotels in town, especially the hotels located downtown, shock her and her family.

“The location of the hotels is more important than the price,” she said. “They do get very crowded on weekends, but my family always tries to book them far in advance.”

Interviewing random locals proved tougher than expected

Reporting and writing the Person on the Street story was more difficult than I originally thought, but was also a good learning experience. I expected interviewing random Bloomington locals and students to be uncomfortable, but everyone I came into contact with was friendly and open to talking to me.

With my beat being community and culture, I could talk to almost anyone about Bloomington’s growing restaurant scene. While most people walking on the street were in a hurry and not interested in talking, I found a couple locals and a student who were all willing to talk about the Bloomington food scene. Each of them offered an interesting opinion and knew more than enough about the restaurants in Bloomington, which was very helpful with the interview questions.

Bloomington residents appreciate Bloomington’s expanding food scene

The growing local food community is valuable to the Bloomington community, according to three random interviews near Courthouse square on Feb. 14, 2018.

“Finding new restaurants and bars is part of the fun when living in Bloomington,” said IU student Parker Dean, 22. “I’ve seen so many new restaurants pop up, and the Bloomington food scene has definitely developed over the four years I have been here.”

Riley Hayes
Riley Hayes is a senior at Indiana University majoring in Journalism with a concentration in Public Relations and Advertising and minoring in Psychology. She is from Denver, Colorado where she will move back following graduation to continue her job at Bread and Butter, a national public relations agency where she focuses on restaurants, travel, and food and beverage. She previously interned at a Denver agency where she spent her time working with clients in the retail and hospitality industries. She spent a summer in Vienna, Austria where she studied Psychology and a semester in London where she studied Communications. Outside of school and work, she enjoys traveling and spending time with friends and family and also hopes to become a Level 1 Sommelier in the near future.
