Bloomington residents ditch the traditional workout for new fitness trends

Bloomington 9 Round manager, Tim Batalon, first noticed a shift in the Bloomington fitness community about four years ago. Newly opened specialty gyms and their unique workout programs have greatly influenced how members of the community choose to exercise.

Laura Chaiken takes a seat on a comfortably padded bench situated under the window, natural sunlight spilling through the intimate entryway to her spa. With soft violet walls, pink Himalayan salt and herbal products on display, she is surrounded by a serene environment that mirrors her warm and inviting demeanor.

“It’s broadened my sense of community, and I would love to still do more,” she says. “It’s really because of this business.”

Approaching strangers on the street doesn’t have to be daunting

Interviewing strangers was not as intimidating as I expected. I had routinely done a similar exercise for an internship in the past, so I knew a little of what to expect. Residents in Bloomington are far more willing to stop and speak than individuals in Chicago.
In general, the individuals I interviewed were very accommodating. I first created three broad questions about the new fitness studios in Bloomington and the ways in which individuals preferred to exercise. I intended to make the questions easy for all demographics to respond to.

Residents prefer group workouts, welcome new franchise facilities to the community

A series of informal interviews on Feb. 14 and Feb. 15 around Kirkwood Avenue indicated support for new franchise fitness studios coming to town. Bloomington residents also reported being more inclined to exercise in a group setting. Many attributed their exercise success and fitness motivation to a more public and interactive workout environment.

Paige Korin is a senior at Indiana University pursuing a degree in the Media school, specializing in Public Relations. She is also minoring in Business Marketing. Paige is an Illinois native who loves all things Chicago. This past summer she interned for a boutique PR agency in the city which further affirmed her love of writing, editing and creating social media content.
