Exclusion of LGBTQ+ students at Lighthouse Christian Academy has negative effects on the community

Twenty-one- year- old Brie Blauvelt is a senior attending IU. She attending Lighthouse Christian Academy for six years and was felt forced to leave at the age of 15 after coming out as a lesbian.

Unlike other gay students attending Lighthouse Christian Academy, 22-year-old Brie Blauvelt left before school officials forced her out with an ultimatum when she came out at the age of 15.

“They didn’t kick me out, but I knew that word was going to get out and that I was going to be kicked out, so I had to leave,” she says.

Talking to strangers builds confidence for interviewing

When I first heard about this assignment and that we had to interview three to four random people on the street, I was nervous. Mainly for the fear of being rejected by strangers and the jab it takes to your confidence, which I knew I needed.

When walking around Bloomington and mentally preparing to stop my next victim, I realized that confidence was key if I wanted people to take me seriously and stop to give me the time of day amidst the gloomy, 30-degree weather.

Bloomington residents: Religious diversity has a positive impact on local service projects

The diversity of religious backgrounds in Bloomington has a positive impact on volunteer work in the community, according to four informal interviews in downtown Bloomington from Feb. 10 through Feb. 13.

In addition to the diversity, the four agreed that regardless of religion, community service projects are open to all.
