Bloomington takes action for bicycle and pedestrian safety

Cherryl Ellison, her teammate, and her Little 500 coach rode their bikes down Shilo Road in May of 2014. Shilo, located about 10 miles northeast of Bloomington, is a curvy, narrow road that is littered with poorly filled potholes and gravel. Ellison’s bike slid out from under her on these poor road conditions, causing her to wreck.

Ellison, a 24-year-old Bloomington native, broke her collar bone twice before, during the 2013 and 2015 Little 500 races. But this was her first time wrecking on the road.

Gloria Estes stands on the deck as she shouts instructions to her basic deep-water fitness class. The pungent smell of chlorine is stagnant in the warm air of the main pool at the Southeast YMCA. She stands in front of the lifeguard fan with well-worn Chaco sandals on her feet and drops of sweat on her forehead.

She turns to her class. “Bicycle shallow, no arms!” she yells, her voice cutting through the constant hum of the air conditioner. Her students, a group of about 10 middle-aged adults, know exactly what she means and start moving in the water.

Interviewing strangers is easy with a bit of luck

Asking random people going about their business to stop and talk to you is always a task that induces a nervous-butterfly feeling in your stomach. I have done person-on-the-street interviews many times before, but unfortunately, it doesn’t get any easier.

When I pulled out my phone to look at the weather, it looked like I only had one day of good weather to pull it off. Cue more nerves.

Bloomington residents look for ways to live healthy lifestyles

Healthy living is a priority, according to four informal interviews conducted in front of the Monroe County Public Library on Feb. 13.

“I try to get out walking as much as I can and stay active,” said 55-year-old Brian McClung of Bloomington. “I’ve seen way too many people become inactive, and they lose their mobility, and that’s not something I want to do.”

Brian Bourkland is a Bloomington bodybuilder using his love for lifting weights to beat the odds of age. He says he is in it for life. “When I’m 75, if I take a fall, I want to be able to get up,” said Bourkland. He also uses his muscular build artistically through modeling.

Anna Darling
Anna Darling is a senior from Brownsburg, Indiana. She is majoring in journalism at Indiana University with a specialization in broadcast journalism and public relations. She is minoring in French and event management. She was a summer intern at WISH-TV in Indianapolis, where she spent each day helping to cover a variety of stories all over the state. She served as the public relations chairman for Alpha Sigma Alpha-Epsilon Phi for one year. She has been a Little 500 rider for three years and is a member of the 2018 IUSF Riders Council. After college, she hopes to be a TV news or sports reporter.
