Bill Nangle, the former executive editor of The Times of Northwest Indiana and a public leader for community service, died Jan. 8 at the age of 70.

Nangle, who was inducted into the hall of fame in 2011, started working at The Times in 1970. Over the course of about 45 years at the paper, he filled various positions, including assistant city editor, manager of the Southlake Bureau, managing editor and executive editor.

Nangle helped transform The Times, aiding in the launch of the paper’s first online edition in 1996 before retiring in 2014 as editor emeritus.

He used the newspaper to motivate readers to do more community service and founded services such as Partners for Prevention, an anti-drug alliance, and  Calumet Kids, a health-screening program for children, among others.

Throughout his career, Nangle received top honors, including the Sagamore of the Wabash citation from Gov. Frank O’Bannon in 2002, the Distinguished Service Award from the state press association in 2008, the Lakeshore Chamber of Commerce distinguished service award in 2009, and the Commonwealth Award for Personal and Professional Leadership from Edgewater Behavior Health Sciences in 2015.
