Grants for Teachers

The IU Media School plans to award several grants for high school teachers. These grants can be applied toward the cost of attending a teacher workshop this summer on the Indiana University-Bloomington campus.  Read the following letter from HSJI director Teresa White for information on applying.

Dear Teachers & Advisers:

We hope you will be able to take one or more workshops we’re offering for scholastic journalism teachers and advisers this summer. You would be most welcome on our campus.

The grants are intended for teachers who currently have journalism teaching or advising responsibilities or who are preparing for those responsibilities. Recipients are expected to return to journalism teaching in the fall. Priority will be given to uncertified teachers/advisers and to those with little or no journalism teaching and advising experience when grant requests exceed funds available.

The IU Media School plans to award Gretchen Kemp Grants to high school teachers/advisers to study at IU in Bloomington this summer. Funds may be used for any HSJI graduate-credit workshop, including J804 Independent Study for Journalism Educators. Grant amounts will be relative to the number of graduate credit hours taken. For example,  those taking three credits may apply for a $900 grant and those taking two credits may apply for a $600 grant. Funds are applied to the tuition bill of workshop participants.

Grants also are available for high school journalism teachers and advisers who enroll in our summer practicum, a customized professional development opportunity that meets during our student workshops in July. Teachers who receive a grant and successfully complete the practicum will be reimbursed their $250 registration fee.

To apply for a grant, mail a letter to me or complete the online form no later than May 1, 2019. In your letter, indicate why you want to enroll in our workshop(s), what you plan to study, and how it fits into your career as a journalism teacher. In addition, you should send a copy of your resume. Letters of recommendation are optional but always appreciated and helpful in the selection process. If you’re applying online, please be sure to attach your resume and recommendation letters in the space provided.

A decision on the grants will be made by a committee consisting of IU faculty members. You will be notified of the committee’s decision in early May.

The Kemp Grants are awarded from funds created by friends and professional associates of the late Gretchen Kemp, a longtime and highly respected IU journalism professor and HSJI’s first director.

Cordially,
