Join The Media School on a spring break service trip to Puerto Viejo, Costa Rica, where you will create a community storytelling campaign to help the Rich Coast Project fulfill its mission of documenting the history and identity of the people of Costa Rica’s southern Caribbean coast.
As a volunteer, you will work with the Rich Coast Project staff and volunteers to produce a photo/voice storytelling project to be shared on the Rich Coast Project’s website and directly to the community at a live local presentation. To create these photo/voice stories, you will work directly with members of the local community to uncover aspects of life in the South Caribbean that they feel are relevant to the communities’ story. This project will act as the second chapter in an ongoing collaboration between The Media School and the Rich Coast Project, begun during Thanksgiving 2016 with a podcast series “Stories from Caribe Sur.”
You will participate in activities and tours to better understand the intense connection between people and nature in this remote, tropical rainforest area. You will hear from community leaders about the importance of the area’s rich cultural history, its Afro-descendant and indigenous roots and the multiculturalism present today. Through one-on-one interview sessions and community storytelling workshops, you will collect audio stories and work within a team to produce a photo/voice project that pairs this audio content with your own documentary video and photography.
