Considering Fernando Birri

Part of the IU Sawyer Seminar on Documentary Media and Historical Transformations

In collaboration with Wounded Galaxies and the Burroughs Century Ltd., the Center for Documentary Research and Practice presents this Sawyer Seminar event honoring Fernando Birri. Birri was an Argentine filmmaker and theorist, considered by many to be the father of the New Latin American Cinema. He died in December 2017, and this is the first event in what will surely be an international re-examination of his life and work.

Isabel Arredondo will present a lecture on Fernando Birri on Friday, February 9th at 2:00 p.m. in the IU Cinema. The talk is part of a panel included in the Wounded Galaxies conference, but is free and open to the public, whether registered for the conference or not.

A screening of the full, rarely seen version of Birri’s film Org will be held Saturday, February 10th, 3:00-6:00 p.m. in the Moving Image Archive’s screening room in the Wells Library. This film is an experimental documentary that uses a Hindu legend to explore Birri’s time spent in exile. The full version of the film, 2 hours and 57 minutes, is not often screened, so this is a rare opportunity to view it. Professor Arredondo will introduce the film.
